The apple has been part of the Food Wheel for many years. In ancient Rome there were many varieties of apples to eat. Nowadays, the number of apple varieties has grown to more than a thousand, according to the Encyclopaedia Britannica.
There are several scientific studies proving that fruits like apples prevent diseases such as Alzheimer’s, cancer and diabetes. However, this should be only one of many fruits and vegetables in a varied and healthy diet.
There is a well-known saying in English that associates the daily consumption of apples with bulletproof health. Who has never heard the expression: “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”, literally translated, it means “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”. In Portugal there are even those who say, “An apple a day gives a healthy life.”

Royal Gala
Characterized by the taste and for being very juicy and crunchy. This apple is very nutritious, rich in fiber, calcium, iron and vitamin C. It emerged in the 60’s in New Zealand, through a cross between the apple “Kidd’s Orange” and the “Golden Delicious”. Portugal is one of the main varieties of apple produced. It is easily recognizable due to its red-striped skin.
Cripps Pink/Red
With Australian origin, it is known as the queen of apples, with its epidermis of pink nuances, on a greenish yellow base. It is crispy and has a dense and firm pulp. Cripps Pink has a high sugar content, which makes it ideal for cooking. It is perfect for making pies, baking in sauces or simply to taste natural.
Top Red
This apple variety is also known as Argentine apple, despite its name, it originates from Central Asia. Although the pulp is more floury, it is known for its firm texture and sweet taste and easy digestion. The bark is very red, bright and vibrant. Being one of the reasons why this apple is widely used in desserts such as pies, compotes and compotes.
Starking
It comes from the USA and is characterized by medium and large caliber. Starking is a curious variety of apples due to its good conservation. It is the type of apple suitable for children, and an excellent moisturizer and contains vitamins (A, B1, B2, C and E). This apple is easy to digest, it’s recommended to consume it with the peel in order to enjoy all its vitamins.
Fuiji
It originated in the late 1930s in Fujisaki (Aomori, Japan) and began trading in 1962.This variety of apple is characterized by sweet taste and low acidity. Its peel is smooth and dull of pale red color superimposed on a cream background. It may also appear with gold spots or be listed.
Golden Delicious
It appeared in the late XIX century and originates from the state of Vírginia in the USA. Of rough epidermis and green color becoming yellowish – golden, with the evolution of maturation. It has a sweet pulp, juicy and little acidic and fragrant.
Granny Smith
This apple species emerged about 150 years ago in Australia and Portugal is one of the few countries where it is produced. Basically known for its green color and sour or less sweet taste than other apples. It’s a great ingredient for salads, cakes, purees, juices. Since it contains fiber and nutrients that regulate the digestive system and metabolism in general.
